Perfume Workshop in Grasse

In the heart of the French Riviera, nestled among sun-drenched hills scented by flower fields, the town of Grasse has embodied the very essence of perfumery for centuries. Considered the world capital of perfume, Grasse owes its reputation to exceptional natural conditions — a mild climate, fertile soil, and a deeply rooted artisanal tradition — that have made this small Provençal town a unique place for olfactory creation.
Among the perfume houses that have shaped this legend, Galimard holds a special place. Founded in 1747 by Jean de Galimard, Lord of Séranon and member of the glove-makers and perfumers guild, the House quickly established itself as one of the very first French perfumeries. At a time when perfumes were notably used to scent gloves — a symbol of refinement at court — Galimard supplied the court of King Louis XV with its first artisanal formulas, blending oils, pomades, and precious fragrances.
Today, more than 270 years after its creation, Galimard continues to uphold this heritage in the purest French tradition while opening its doors to those who wish to explore the delicate art of perfume creation.

Become a Creator: The Galimard Perfume Workshop in Grasse

For travelers seeking authentic and sensory experiences, nothing compares to a visit to the Galimard Studio des Fragrances. Unlike a simple boutique visit or museum tour, this immersive workshop plunges you into the creative process of a perfumer — a rare and playful olfactory adventure.
Under the expert guidance of a perfume assistant, you discover how a fragrance is structured around three main categories of notes: top notes, heart notes, and base notes.

But what does that actually mean?

  • Top notes are the first olfactory impressions of a perfume: fresh, vibrant, often citrusy or herbal, they immediately capture attention but fade quickly.

  • Heart notes, or the “heart of the fragrance,” bring the main personality to the scent. They are deeper, floral or spicy, and last for several hours after the top notes evaporate.

  • Base notes are the rich, long-lasting foundations — precious woods, musk, vanilla, or patchouli — that anchor the perfume and prolong its presence on the skin.

This structure, sometimes called the olfactory pyramid, is essential for creating a balanced and harmonious fragrance. Each perfume tells a story that evolves over time: the first impression captures attention, the heart reveals personality, and the base leaves a lasting signature.

The experience takes place at the perfumer’s organ, equipped with more than a hundred different essences, where you can explore, combine, and dose each ingredient to compose your own fragrance.
This moment is far more than a simple workshop — it is a true sensory initiation. You learn to recognize scents, understand how they interact, and translate your emotions, memories, or inspirations into perfume. At the end of the session, your unique creation is bottled in an elegant 100 ml flacon that you take home with you, along with your apprentice perfumer diploma.

Grasse: Historic Capital of Perfume and Endless Inspiration

The experience at Galimard can only be fully appreciated when you take a moment to contemplate Grasse itself, a town built around the art of perfume. As early as the 16th century, Grasse distinguished itself through the cultivation of perfume flowers — jasmine, May rose, orange blossom, and many others — which attracted the first perfumers in search of exceptional raw materials.
During the Renaissance, the fashion for perfumed gloves worn at the French court transformed the local economy, making Grasse an essential artisanal center. Over the centuries, this tradition deepened, giving rise to unique technical and artistic expertise that helped the town earn recognition as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site.
Today, Grasse is not just a tourist stop: it is a living place where history and modernity meet. Seasonal flower fields, distilleries, museums, and workshops such as Galimard all contribute to making each visit an unforgettable sensory journey.
