Why Is It Called the French Riviera? Between History, Landscapes, and Poetry

When I guide travelers along this luminous coastline for the first time, one question almost always comes up: why is it called the French Riviera? And where do the other names we often hear—like Alpes-Maritimes or Riviera—come from?

Behind these names lie fascinating stories, blending literature, geography, and cultural influences. Here, each name reveals a different facet of the region, between a sparkling sea and majestic mountains.

French Riviera: a poetic invention that became legendary

The term “French Riviera” hasn’t always existed. It was coined in the 19th century by a French writer, Stéphen Liégeard, in a book published in 1887. Captivated by the light and the unique color of the Mediterranean Sea, he chose the word “azure” to describe that deep, almost unreal blue that defines the coastline.

At the time, he wanted a name that felt more evocative and appealing than the existing administrative terms. His goal? To inspire dreams, attract visitors, and elevate the region. And it worked perfectly.

Since then, the French Riviera has instantly evoked:

  • a mild climate all year round
  • exceptional light
  • a sea with deep turquoise reflections
  • a lifestyle centered around the outdoors

It’s a name that speaks to the senses—almost a promise of travel before you even arrive.

Alpes-Maritimes: where mountains meet the sea

While “French Riviera” inspires dreams, “Alpes-Maritimes” is a more geographical term. It is the name of the French department that covers a large part of this region.

The meaning is simple yet powerful:

  • “Alpes” for the mountains
  • “Maritimes” for their immediate proximity to the sea

And this is precisely what makes the region so unique. In less than an hour, you can go from the beaches of Nice to the peaks of the Mercantour National Park.

This striking contrast is at the heart of the region’s identity. It also explains why the area is so popular with hikers: the landscapes are incredibly diverse, combining:

  • Mediterranean coves
  • pine forests
  • hilltop villages
  • alpine peaks

The name Alpes-Maritimes is therefore more than administrative—it reflects a physical reality: a land where mountains quite literally plunge into the sea.

Riviera: an elegance shaped by European history

Finally, you will often hear the term “Riviera,” or more specifically the “French Riviera.”

This word comes from the Italian riviera, meaning simply “coast.” Historically, it referred to the entire Mediterranean shoreline stretching from southern France to northern Italy.

In the 19th century, with the arrival of British and European aristocrats seeking winter retreats, the term “Riviera” became popular in international circles. It came to represent:

  • luxury
  • grand hotels
  • exotic gardens
  • a refined way of life

Cities like Monaco, Cannes, and Menton quickly became favored destinations for Europe’s elite.

Even today, “Riviera” carries an elegant and international connotation. It’s the term most often used in foreign media, travel brochures, and artists’ accounts inspired by the region.

In the end, these three names don’t compete—they complement each other.

  • “French Riviera” evokes poetry and light
  • “Alpes-Maritimes” describes the dramatic geography
  • “Riviera” reflects history and international influence

And when you explore this region—whether wandering through a village or walking along a coastal trail—you quickly understand why it has inspired so many names… and so many emotions.
