She shares a sincere, elegant Riviera, far from the clichés.

Just a few hours from the Mediterranean Sea, Mercantour National Park reveals a completely different side of the French Riviera. Here, palm trees give way to larch forests, turquoise coves are replaced by high-altitude lakes, and seaside strolls become mountain trails.

If you love nature, wide-open landscapes and hiking, the Mercantour is an essential destination to discover.

With peaks rising above 3,000 metres, unspoilt valleys and abundant wildlife, the park is one of the most beautiful natural areas in the south of France. Whether you are an experienced hiker or simply looking for a pleasant walk surrounded by nature, there is bound to be a route that suits you.

And that is precisely what makes the Mercantour so special: you can spend a single day here or several weeks without ever feeling as though you are repeating the same hike.

The Mercantour: Between the Mediterranean and the High Mountains

One of the Mercantour’s most remarkable features is its proximity to the French Riviera.

From Nice, you simply need to head inland to see the landscape gradually transform. Within a relatively short distance, the Mediterranean atmosphere gives way to a much more Alpine environment.

The park stretches across the Alpes-Maritimes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments and is home to an incredible variety of landscapes. Deep valleys, larch forests, Alpine meadows, rocky cliffs and snow-covered peaks create a particularly spectacular setting.

Among the best-known areas, the Vallée des Merveilles, or Valley of Wonders, attracts many visitors each year, not only for its dramatic scenery but also for its famous prehistoric rock carvings, some of which date back several thousand years.

The Mercantour is also a remarkable place for wildlife watching. With a little luck, and by remaining quiet and respectful, you may spot marmots, chamois, ibex or even golden eagles.

Wolves, now an emblematic presence in the French Alps, also live within the park, although seeing one in the wild remains extremely rare.

For me, this is where the real magic of the Mercantour lies: you may come here first for the hiking, but you often leave with the feeling that you have experienced a landscape that is still genuinely wild and preserved.

The Most Beautiful Hikes in the Mercantour

It is impossible to talk about the Mercantour without mentioning its many hiking trails.

There are routes for every level, from easy family walks to far more demanding mountain hikes.

Among the must-see destinations, Lac d’Allos is certainly one of the most impressive. Located at an altitude of more than 2,200 metres, it is often described as the largest natural high-altitude lake in Europe.

The hike takes you into a magnificent mountain landscape surrounded by peaks and Alpine pastures. It is an excellent choice for a first experience of hiking in the mountains, provided you check the access conditions before setting out, as they can vary depending on the season.

The Vallée des Merveilles is particularly interesting for visitors who enjoy history and heritage.

Its trails cross impressive mineral landscapes and lead past the famous prehistoric engravings carved into the rocks. Some sections are protected and subject to specific regulations, so visitors must follow certain rules in order to preserve this exceptional archaeological heritage.

For those looking for a more challenging hike, the areas around the Gordolasque Valley, Le Boréon and the Tinée Valley also offer beautiful routes.

Here, you will find waterfalls, mountain lakes, forests and numerous viewpoints over the surrounding peaks.

But my advice is simple: do not necessarily look for the longest or most difficult hike.

In the Mercantour, even a trail of just a few kilometres can offer extraordinary scenery. Take the time to look around, stop beside a lake or simply sit for a few minutes facing the mountains.

How to Prepare for a Hike in the Mercantour

Hiking in the Mercantour does require a minimum amount of preparation.

Mountain conditions can be unpredictable, and the weather can change quickly, particularly at higher altitudes. Before setting out, it is therefore essential to check the weather forecast, the difficulty of the route, the elevation gain and any access restrictions.

Good hiking shoes are essential, as are plenty of water, some food, sun protection and suitable clothing.

Even during summer, temperatures can be cool at altitude, so carrying a lightweight jacket and an extra warm layer can make a real difference.

It is also important to remember that hiking in the mountains is not always a simple walk.

Some trails are steep or uneven and require a reasonable level of fitness. If you are a beginner, choose an easy, well-marked route rather than attempting a hike that is too ambitious.

Finally, remember that you are visiting a protected natural environment.

Do not leave any rubbish behind, avoid leaving marked trails where doing so is prohibited, and above all, respect the wildlife.

That is also part of experiencing the Mercantour: enjoying its landscapes while helping to preserve them.

Ultimately, the Mercantour is much more than a destination for hiking enthusiasts. It is an escape into the mountains and a chance to discover another side of the French Riviera, far from the bustle of the coastline.

So, if you are staying in Nice or elsewhere in the Alpes-Maritimes, consider heading towards the mountains. A day spent hiking in the Mercantour is often the kind of experience you will remember for a long time.
