When we think of the French Riviera, we often picture long summer days, crowded beaches, lively terraces and yachts in the ports of Nice, Cannes or Saint-Tropez. Yet, October on the French Riviera offers a completely different atmosphere, and that is precisely what makes it so appealing. The summer heat gradually gives way to milder temperatures, the streets are less crowded and the light becomes particularly beautiful.

As a guide, this is a time of year I particularly enjoy when showing visitors around the region. You can take your time wandering through villages, enjoying the sea, visiting museums or exploring the Nice hinterland without feeling like you are constantly rushing. So, what to do on the French Riviera in October? Here are some ideas to make the most of this beautiful season.

Enjoy Nice and the Seafront in October

Nice in October is a particularly pleasant destination. Temperatures often remain mild enough to enjoy the seafront, even though swimming becomes less predictable. It is the perfect time to take a leisurely walk along the Promenade des Anglais, admire the Baie des Anges from Castle Hill or simply sit on a terrace and enjoy a coffee.

The Old Town of Nice, or Vieux-Nice, is also well worth exploring. In October, its colourful narrow streets are much more enjoyable to wander through than during the height of summer. You can take the time to admire the colourful façades, discover small local shops, enjoy a slice of socca or stop at a bakery to taste some traditional Niçois specialities.

For culture lovers, autumn is also an excellent time to visit the museums of Nice. The Musée Matisse, Musée Marc Chagall and Musée des Beaux-Arts offer the opportunity to discover another side of the city, beyond its famous seaside image.

And if the weather is good, why not end the day with a walk along the coast? In October, sunsets over the Baie des Anges can be spectacular. The softer autumn light often gives the landscape particularly warm and golden colours.

Discover the Villages of the French Riviera and the Hinterland

October is also an excellent time to explore the villages of the French Riviera. Away from the summer crowds, the small streets of the hinterland return to their usual pace, allowing visitors to take their time and discover the history and character of each village.

From Nice, several villages are easily accessible. Èze, perched high above the Mediterranean, offers one of the most impressive views in the region. You can wander through its cobbled streets, visit the exotic garden and enjoy spectacular views over the sea.

A little further away, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a must for art and heritage lovers. Its ramparts, galleries and charming squares give the village a unique atmosphere. In October, walking around is particularly enjoyable, with far fewer visitors than during the peak tourist season.

I also recommend discovering Tourrettes-sur-Loup, famous for its violets and local craftsmanship. The village is surrounded by lush landscapes and offers a beautiful escape just a few kilometres from the coast.

And for those who want to venture a little higher into the hills, head to Gourdon. Perched on a rocky spur, the village overlooks the Loup Valley and offers spectacular views of the landscapes of the French Riviera hinterland.

October is also a lovely time to observe the changing seasons. The colours of the valleys are beginning to change, while the temperatures are ideal for a hike or a walk in the countryside.

Enjoy Local Events, Markets and the Gentle Autumn Atmosphere

What to do in October on the French Riviera? Simply enjoy the local atmosphere! Autumn is the perfect time to experience a more authentic side of the French Riviera, particularly through its Provençal markets.

In Nice, the Cours Saleya market is an essential stop. With its flowers, fruit and vegetables, regional produce and local specialities, it is an excellent place to discover the flavours of the region. Other markets can also be found throughout the towns and villages along the coast.

October is an interesting time to discover seasonal produce as well. Markets begin to feature more pumpkins, mushrooms, chestnuts and other autumn specialities. It is a great opportunity to experience Mediterranean cuisine as it changes with the seasons.

For wine lovers, autumn is also an interesting time to explore the vineyards of Provence. Some wineries offer tours and tastings, giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about the work carried out in the vineyards and discover local wines.

Finally, October is an ideal time to plan a day trip on the French Riviera. From Nice, you can easily reach Cannes, Antibes, Monaco, Menton or the hilltop villages of the hinterland in a single day. With generally milder weather and fewer tourists, these excursions allow you to discover more places while enjoying a slower and more relaxed pace.

That is exactly what I love about the French Riviera in October: you can still enjoy the sea and the Mediterranean light while experiencing a calmer atmosphere. Whether it is your first visit or another getaway to the region, the French Riviera in the off-season has plenty of beautiful surprises in store.

So, rather than waiting for next summer, why not discover the Riviera in a different way?
