On the French Riviera, markets are some of the best places to truly experience the atmosphere of a town. People come to buy local produce, taste a Niçois speciality, browse for an antique or simply stroll among the colourful stalls. In Nice, Antibes and Beaulieu-sur-Mer, each market has its own personality and tells a little story about the region.

When visiting the French Riviera, taking the time to explore its markets is therefore a wonderful way to experience the destination beyond the usual tourist attractions. From the famous Cours Saleya in Nice to the antiques market, as well as the Italian market in Beaulieu-sur-Mer and the markets of Antibes, here are some addresses not to miss.

Cours Saleya in Nice: The French Riviera's Must-Visit Market

If there is one market you should visit during a stay in Nice, it is Cours Saleya. Located in the heart of Vieux-Nice, between colourful façades and the narrow streets of the historic centre, it is one of the liveliest places in the city.

In the morning, the stalls are filled with fruit and vegetables, flowers, olives, cheeses, local produce and regional specialities. The colours and aromas blend together to create that unmistakable holiday atmosphere that visitors come to the French Riviera for. It is also an opportunity to discover some of the essentials of Niçois cuisine, including socca, pissaladière, petits farcis and pan bagnat.

The flower market is particularly enjoyable to explore. Colourful bouquets bring a distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere to Cours Saleya. Even if you are not planning to buy anything, it is well worth a visit, especially early in the morning when the temperatures are still pleasant and the stalls have just been set up.

A little tip from a local guide: after visiting the market, take a few minutes to wander through the narrow streets of Vieux-Nice. You will easily find a charming terrace where you can enjoy a coffee or taste a traditional Niçois speciality.

Cours Saleya also changes atmosphere depending on the day and the season. Some days focus more on fresh produce, while others offer the chance to discover antique dealers and local artisans. This variety is precisely what makes it one of Nice’s most iconic markets.

The Antiques Market: Treasure Hunting in the Heart of Vieux-Nice

In Nice, the antiques market offers a very different atmosphere from the food market at Cours Saleya. Located around Cours Saleya and throughout Vieux-Nice, it attracts lovers of antiques, vintage finds and home décor who come looking for a unique piece or simply enjoy browsing the stalls.

You can find a wide variety of objects, including antique furniture, paintings, mirrors, tableware, glassware, jewellery, books, decorative objects and collector’s items. Some stalls focus more on Provençal and Mediterranean antiques, while others offer a more eclectic selection. That mix is precisely what makes the experience so enjoyable: you might move from an old poster to a traditional faience dinner service, then come across a small piece of furniture or an unusual object you never knew you were looking for.

The antiques market is particularly appealing to anyone who enjoys antique shopping on the French Riviera. There is no need to have a specific item in mind. Take your time to look around, compare pieces and chat with the sellers. Regular visitors sometimes come searching for a particular item, while travellers can simply let themselves be surprised by an unexpected find.

The atmosphere is also very different from that of a traditional antiques shop. The objects are displayed in the heart of Vieux-Nice, surrounded by colourful façades and the narrow streets of the historic centre. It is a wonderful opportunity to combine antique shopping with exploring the Old Town of Nice.

The Markets of Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Antibes: Between the Mediterranean and Italian Flavours

Just a few kilometres from Nice, Beaulieu-sur-Mer also offers a lovely market experience. The town is known for its elegant setting, harbour and beautiful villas, but its market provides a more local atmosphere.

Once a month, the Italian market in Beaulieu-sur-Mer brings a touch of Italy to the town. Visitors can find Italian products and specialities from just across the border, including cured meats, cheeses, pasta, olive oils, regional products and other delicious treats. It is a great opportunity to pick up a few things while enjoying the charm of Beaulieu-sur-Mer.

And for food lovers, it is hard to resist the idea of taking home a few products to enjoy later, perhaps during an aperitif overlooking the Mediterranean.

Further west, Antibes also has a strong market culture. The Provençal market in Antibes, located in the heart of Old Antibes, is particularly popular for its lively atmosphere. Under the arcades of Cours Masséna, local producers and traders offer fruit, vegetables, spices, cheeses, flowers, regional products and Provençal specialities.

The market is also an excellent starting point for exploring Old Antibes. After wandering between the stalls, you can continue through the small streets of the historic centre, walk along the ramparts and enjoy the views over the sea.

My advice: to really enjoy the markets in Antibes and Nice, avoid the hottest hours of the day whenever possible. Come in the morning, take your time browsing the stalls and let yourself be guided by the aromas and colours. This is often when you make the best discoveries.

From Niçois products and Provençal specialities to Italian flavours and antique treasures, the markets of the French Riviera offer a different way to experience the region. They allow you to meet local traders, taste products from the area and, above all, slow down and enjoy the Mediterranean way of life.

So, on your next trip to the French Riviera, keep a morning free: your favourite souvenir might just be waiting for you at the next market stall.
