On the French Riviera, some villages seem to have been designed to offer the most breathtaking views. Èze Village is certainly one of the most impressive. Perched on its rocky outcrop between Nice and Monaco, it overlooks the Mediterranean and offers spectacular views of the coastline.

But Èze is much more than its charming narrow streets and picture-postcard scenery. Behind its ancient stone walls lies a rich history shaped by fortifications, invasions, travellers and artists. Above all, the commune has a distinctive feature that is sometimes overlooked: Èze is divided into two main areas, the hilltop village and Èze-sur-Mer.

Connecting the two is an iconic trail that takes you from the mountains down to the Mediterranean: the famous Nietzsche Path.

The best way to discover Èze is to start with its hilltop village. As soon as you pass through its entrance, you step into a maze of narrow cobbled streets, vaulted passageways and traditional stone houses. Cars give way to pedestrians here, and after only a few steps, it feels as though you have travelled several centuries back in time.

The village’s location is no coincidence. Built high above the coast on a naturally difficult-to-access site, Èze enjoyed an ideal strategic position for defending itself and keeping watch over the surrounding area. During the Middle Ages, the village was protected by ramparts and dominated by a castle, of which only a few remains can still be seen today.

As you wander through the streets, you can still admire the medieval architecture that gives Èze so much of its charm. The houses appear to be stacked one above another, while small squares suddenly emerge around the corner of narrow passageways.

At the very top of the village is the Exotic Garden of Èze, created on the ruins of the former castle. It is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular places from which to appreciate the village’s unique geography. The garden is home to a wide variety of exotic and Mediterranean plants, including numerous species of cacti and succulents.

But the real star is the view. From the summit, the Mediterranean stretches as far as the eye can see, with panoramic views towards Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and, in the other direction, towards Monaco and Italy.

The trail is named after the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who stayed on the French Riviera in the late 19th century. He is said to have greatly enjoyed walking along this route between the mountains and the sea, and some of his philosophical reflections are believed to have been inspired by the landscapes he encountered during his walks.

Today, the trail has become a must-do hike for visitors who want to experience Èze from a different perspective. The path descends through Mediterranean vegetation and regularly opens up to beautiful views over the sea.

The hike does require some effort. The terrain is rocky and the descent can be quite steep in places. Depending on your pace and how often you stop, allow around one hour to reach Èze-sur-Mer.

And those stops are part of the pleasure of the walk. There is no need to search for a specific viewpoint: the sea gradually appears between the trees and rocks as you make your way down.

Once you reach the bottom, the change of atmosphere is immediate. Èze-sur-Mer sits directly on the Mediterranean and reveals a much more seaside-oriented side of the commune. After the medieval streets of the hilltop village, you are greeted by the beach, pebbles and turquoise water.

If you are planning to walk the Nietzsche Path, make sure you wear suitable shoes and bring plenty of water. And most importantly, think about the return journey! The descent to the sea is enjoyable, but walking back uphill is considerably more demanding. A good option is therefore to hike in one direction only and check the available transport options for returning to Èze Village.

If Èze Village already offers exceptional views, you can climb even higher by visiting the Fort de la Révère.

Located on the Plateau de la Révère above Èze, this fort is part of the region’s military heritage. Built at the end of the 19th century, it formed part of the defensive system protecting Nice and the surrounding hinterland. At the time, these elevated positions were particularly important for monitoring valleys and access routes.

Today, the fort and its surroundings offer visitors the opportunity to discover another side of the region. The environment is much wilder than the village itself, with mountain landscapes and magnificent panoramic views across the French Riviera.

It is also a great way to understand just how unique the territory of Èze really is. Within only a few kilometres, you can travel from the Mediterranean coast to the mountains, passing through a medieval village perched dramatically on its rocky outcrop.

Ultimately, Èze is much more than just a picturesque tourist village. It is a place where history, nature and the Mediterranean come together at every turn. Its ancient stone buildings tell the story of its medieval past, its Exotic Garden showcases another aspect of its heritage, the Nietzsche Path connects the heights with the sea, and the Fort de la Révère reflects the strategic importance these mountains once held.

So, the next time you are travelling along the French Riviera, take the time to stop in Èze. And do not settle for taking a few photos from the village: wander through its narrow streets, climb to the Exotic Garden, walk down towards the sea and simply take the time to enjoy the scenery. Taking things slowly is often the best way to truly discover the villages of the French Riviera.

A little tip: Èze Village can get very busy during the day, particularly in high season. To fully enjoy the narrow streets and the Exotic Garden, it is best to visit early in the morning or after 5:30 p.m. There are usually fewer visitors, and the late-afternoon light gives the village a particularly beautiful atmosphere.
