The Best Sunset Spots on the French Riviera

On the French Riviera, sunset is never simply a moment of the day. It is a true experience, almost a ritual for both locals and travellers. As the golden light gently touches the Mediterranean, the hills turn shades of orange and pink, and everything seems to slow down. Between the sea and the mountains, the Riviera offers an incredible diversity of landscapes for watching the sun disappear below the horizon.

As a local guide, I can tell you one thing: there is not just one sunset on the French Riviera, but dozens, each with its own personality. From the cliffs of Nice to the red rocks of the Esterel, and the hilltop villages such as Èze, every spot tells a different story.

Nice and Its Golden Panoramas: Between Sea and Hills

It is impossible to talk about the best sunset spots on the French Riviera without starting with Nice. The city offers countless viewpoints where you can watch the sun set over the Mediterranean.

The Promenade des Anglais is an obvious favourite. Sitting on one of the famous blue chairs facing the Baie des Anges, you can enjoy a natural spectacle as the sky sets the sea ablaze with colour. The atmosphere is peaceful and almost meditative, especially outside the peak summer season.

For an even more spectacular view, head to Castle Hill. From the top, Nice reveals itself in all its beauty, with a 360-degree panorama over the city, harbour and Mediterranean Sea. At sunset, the rooftops turn golden and the boats appear to float in an almost surreal light.

A little further along, Cap de Nice and especially the road towards Villefranche-sur-Mer offer another magical setting. The deep bay, considered one of the most beautiful in the world, transforms into a pink and orange mirror. It is the perfect place for those looking for a more peaceful moment away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

Cannes, the Esterel and the Islands: Watching the Sun Set Over the Sea

Heading west, the atmosphere changes completely. In Cannes, sunset along the Croisette feels almost cinematic. The golden light glides across the luxury hotels, palm trees stand out against the orange sky and the sea takes on shimmering golden reflections.

But the real treasure of this area is the Lérins Islands. Whether seen from a boat or from the coastline, the sunset behind these protected islands, particularly Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat, is truly spectacular. The contrast between untouched nature and the sparkling Mediterranean is striking.

Even more dramatic, the Esterel Massif offers some of the most impressive sunsets on the entire French Riviera. Between Théoule-sur-Mer and Saint-Raphaël, the volcanic red rocks seem to catch fire as they are touched by the final rays of sunlight. It almost feels as though the mountains themselves are glowing.

This is an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts, but also for anyone looking to experience a powerful, raw and almost wild moment surrounded by nature.

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Èze and the Charm of the Hilltop Villages

East of Nice, the landscapes become more intimate and elegant. Cap-Ferrat, particularly its coastal path, is a wonderful place to watch the sunset. Surrounded by hidden coves and luxurious villas tucked away in lush vegetation, the light here feels soft and refined.

The hilltop village of Èze is another must-see. From the heights of the medieval village, visitors can watch the sun sink towards the horizon in an almost sacred silence. The contrast between the ancient stone buildings and the vast blue Mediterranean is simply magical.

Further west, the Antibes area and Cap d’Antibes also offer spectacular viewpoints, particularly along the coastal paths. As the sun sets behind the Southern Alps, a soft pink glow spreads across the ramparts and beaches.

And how could we not mention Saint-Tropez? From the harbour or the beaches of Pampelonne, sunset has a unique atmosphere, combining elegance and the relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle. Sailboats gently sway on the water, the sky turns pastel, and it becomes easy to understand why so many visitors fall in love with the French Riviera.

On the French Riviera, every sunset is an invitation to slow down, observe and simply take in the moment. Whether you are on a hill overlooking Nice, on a beach in Cannes or in a hilltop village such as Èze, the spectacle is always different — but always unforgettable.
