What to Do on the French Riviera in August: The Best Experiences to Make the Most of Summer

August is the heart of summer on the French Riviera. The days are hot, the Mediterranean reaches its ideal temperature, the coastal towns come alive almost around the clock, and the atmosphere becomes especially festive. It is the holiday season at its peak, when the region fully reveals its energy and Mediterranean lifestyle.

As a local travel guide, I often recommend visiting in August to travelers who enjoy lively destinations, long summer evenings, and sun-drenched landscapes. Of course, the Riviera is busier than in spring, but by knowing where to go and when, you can still enjoy everything the Côte d’Azur has to offer.

So, what are the best things to do on the French Riviera in August? From stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife to hidden gems, here are my top recommendations.

Enjoy the Sea and the Most Beautiful Beaches on the French Riviera

In August, the Mediterranean becomes the true heart of life on the French Riviera. The sea is warm—often around 25°C (77°F)—and many days begin with a refreshing swim.

Famous beaches in Nice, Cannes, and Juan-les-Pins naturally attract large numbers of visitors. The atmosphere is unmistakably summery, with people alternating between sunbathing, beachfront restaurants, and seaside strolls.

However, the French Riviera is also home to quieter spots for those looking to escape the crowds. I often recommend the small coves of Théoule-sur-Mer, the beaches around Cap d’Antibes, or the hidden coves near Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

August is also the perfect time to discover the coastline by boat. Excursions to the Lérins Islands, just off the coast of Cannes, remain one of the best experiences. The crystal-clear water, peaceful atmosphere, and breathtaking scenery make these islands a true summer paradise.

For water sports enthusiasts, this is also peak season for paddleboarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, and parasailing. The sea is usually very calm in the morning, making conditions ideal for outdoor activities.

And then there are the unforgettable summer evenings by the sea. In August, beach clubs and waterfront restaurants take on an almost magical atmosphere at sunset. Soft music, golden light, and the sea breeze create the unmistakable charm that makes the French Riviera so famous.

Summer Nights, Festivals, and Fireworks

August is probably the liveliest month of the year on the French Riviera. Almost every town hosts concerts, festivals, or evening events throughout the month.

In Cannes, the Plages Électroniques festival keeps the summer party going with concerts and DJ sets directly on the beach. The event attracts visitors from all over Europe and perfectly captures the vibrant spirit of the season.

Nice, Antibes, and Monaco also offer countless open-air events, including concerts, live performances, outdoor cinemas, and summer festivals that keep the evenings buzzing.

One of the season’s highlights is the spectacular fireworks displays. Several coastal towns organize breathtaking pyrotechnic shows over the Mediterranean. In Cannes and Monaco, these evenings attract both locals and visitors, creating a lively and friendly atmosphere along the beaches and promenades.

Night markets are another must-see experience in August. I often recommend taking an evening stroll through the markets of the smaller seaside resorts, where you’ll find local artisans, Provençal specialties, handmade jewelry, and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere.

And of course, no August evening on the French Riviera would be complete without visiting its rooftop bars, beach clubs, and lively terraces, many of which stay open late into the night. During this season, the Riviera hardly ever sleeps.

Escape to the Countryside and Discover Another Side of the French Riviera

Even during the busiest month of the year, it is still possible to escape the crowds and enjoy a cooler, more authentic side of the French Riviera.

The Riviera’s hinterland is perfect for this. I often suggest leaving early in the morning to visit hilltop villages such as Gourdon, Èze, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, or Coaraze. These picturesque villages offer shaded streets, breathtaking views, and a much more peaceful atmosphere than the coastline.

August is also an excellent time to explore the region’s rivers and cool valleys. Areas near the Mercantour National Park or the Roya Valley offer crystal-clear natural pools where you can swim far from the busy beaches.

Hiking enthusiasts will also enjoy early morning walks through the Estérel Massif. The dramatic contrast between its red volcanic rocks and the blue Mediterranean Sea creates some of the Riviera’s most spectacular scenery, especially at sunrise.

And then there are the Provençal summer markets. During August, they are filled with Mediterranean flavors: figs, melons, olives, heirloom tomatoes, lavender, and aromatic herbs. For me, these markets are an essential part of experiencing the French Riviera.

August on the French Riviera is a true celebration of summer. The region comes alive with sunny beaches, vibrant nightlife, and breathtaking Mediterranean landscapes.

Although it is the busiest time of the year, there are still countless opportunities to discover quieter places and experience a more authentic side of southern France.

If you love the atmosphere of summer holidays, warm evenings, and the vibrant energy of the Mediterranean, August is undoubtedly one of the best times to experience the French Riviera.
