Even during the busiest month of the year, it is still possible to escape the crowds and enjoy a cooler, more authentic side of the French Riviera.
The Riviera’s hinterland is perfect for this. I often suggest leaving early in the morning to visit hilltop villages such as Gourdon, Èze, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, or Coaraze. These picturesque villages offer shaded streets, breathtaking views, and a much more peaceful atmosphere than the coastline.
August is also an excellent time to explore the region’s rivers and cool valleys. Areas near the Mercantour National Park or the Roya Valley offer crystal-clear natural pools where you can swim far from the busy beaches.
Hiking enthusiasts will also enjoy early morning walks through the Estérel Massif. The dramatic contrast between its red volcanic rocks and the blue Mediterranean Sea creates some of the Riviera’s most spectacular scenery, especially at sunrise.
And then there are the Provençal summer markets. During August, they are filled with Mediterranean flavors: figs, melons, olives, heirloom tomatoes, lavender, and aromatic herbs. For me, these markets are an essential part of experiencing the French Riviera.
August on the French Riviera is a true celebration of summer. The region comes alive with sunny beaches, vibrant nightlife, and breathtaking Mediterranean landscapes.
Although it is the busiest time of the year, there are still countless opportunities to discover quieter places and experience a more authentic side of southern France.
If you love the atmosphere of summer holidays, warm evenings, and the vibrant energy of the Mediterranean, August is undoubtedly one of the best times to experience the French Riviera.
