What to do in May on the French Riviera? A local’s guide to enjoying the spring season

May is undoubtedly one of the most magical times to discover the French Riviera. Nature is in full bloom, temperatures become ideal, and the atmosphere balances between springtime softness and the first hints of summer. As a tour guide, I can say it’s a period I’m particularly fond of: the region regains its energy without yet being overwhelmed by the summer crowds.

So, what should you do in May on the French Riviera? From iconic events to sun-drenched beaches and countryside escapes, here are my must-sees.

The Cannes Film Festival: the must-see event of May

It’s impossible to talk about May on the French Riviera without mentioning the famous Cannes Film Festival. For about ten days, the city of Cannes becomes the center of the film world. The atmosphere is unique: glamour, excitement, and curiosity blend in the streets.

Even without accreditation, there are countless ways to enjoy this legendary event. I always recommend visitors take a walk along La Croisette in the late afternoon. You can feel the festival’s excitement everywhere: photographers on alert, fans hoping to catch a glimpse of a star, and luxury hotels buzzing with activity.

In the evening, Cannes lights up even more. Some outdoor screenings are open to the public, and the atmosphere becomes almost festive. It’s also the perfect opportunity to see the city from a more vibrant and lively perspective.

A local tip: take time to step away from La Croisette and explore Le Suquet, Cannes’ old quarter. You’ll find a peaceful atmosphere and a stunning view over the bay.

The return of sunny days and the first beach outings

May marks the true return of warm weather on the French Riviera. Days are long and bright, with temperatures usually ranging between 20 and 25°C. For me, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the beaches without the crowds of July and August.

The first swims of the season often happen for the bravest, but even without going into the water, it’s a pleasure to sit on the sand or pebbles facing a sea that is already a brilliant blue.

In Nice, the Promenade des Anglais comes back to life: joggers, families, cyclists… everyone seems to be enjoying the outdoors again. In Antibes or Villefranche-sur-Mer, the atmosphere is softer, almost intimate. It’s easy to find a quiet little cove to relax.

It’s also the perfect time to have lunch by the sea. Restaurants fully reopen their terraces, and you rediscover a simple pleasure: eating with a view of the Mediterranean, a light breeze, and the sun on your skin.

And then there’s the light… a soft spring light that enhances the landscapes. Photographers know it well: May is a perfect month to capture the Riviera at its best.

Exploring the hinterland: hilltop villages and blooming nature

f I had to give you one essential tip for your stay in May, it would be this: don’t stay only on the coast. The Riviera’s hinterland is absolutely stunning at this time of year.

The hills are green, wildflowers are everywhere, and temperatures are ideal for walking. Villages like Èze, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, or Gourdon offer a complete immersion into a different French Riviera—more authentic and peaceful.

I’ve always loved wandering through these stone streets where time seems to stand still. In May, there are not yet the summer crowds, which makes the experience even more enjoyable. You can take your time chatting with artisans, discovering art galleries, or simply sitting on a shaded terrace in a quiet square.

For nature lovers, it’s also a perfect time for hiking. Trails in the Mercantour National Park or coastal paths offer spectacular views between sea and mountains.

And then there are the Provençal markets, which feel particularly special in spring. Seasonal fruits, local products, flowers… it’s a true festival of colors and scents. This is where you can truly feel the soul of the region.

May on the French Riviera offers a perfect balance between lively energy and a relaxed lifestyle. Between the glamour of the Cannes Film Festival, the first beach days, and countryside escapes, everyone can find something to enjoy.

If you ask me when to come to truly experience the essence of the French Riviera, my answer would be without hesitation: May. Because everything begins gently, under an already generous sun.
