Unusual Things to Do on the French Riviera

When people think of the French Riviera, they immediately picture beaches, turquoise waters, and sun-drenched hilltop villages. But beyond these clichés, the region is full of unexpected and sometimes hidden experiences that allow you to discover the Riviera in a completely different way. As a passionate guide, I invite you to step off the beaten path and explore unique activities that will give a whole new dimension to your stay.

Exploring Hidden and Lesser-Known Places

The French Riviera is full of discreet treasures that few visitors take the time to discover. One of the most fascinating is undoubtedly the wild trails of the Estérel Massif. Here, red rocks plunge into the sea, offering spectacular views far from the crowds. Some paths lead to secret coves accessible only on foot or by kayak—perfect for a timeless escape.

Another surprising place is the village of Sainte-Agnès, perched high above the sea and considered one of the highest coastal villages in Europe. As you stroll through it, you’ll discover hanging gardens and breathtaking views over the Mediterranean, as well as an underground military fort—an unexpected historical relic.

For a truly original experience, head to the Lérins Islands off the coast of Cannes. While Sainte-Marguerite Island is well known, Saint-Honorat Island remains more confidential. There, you can taste wine produced by monks in a peaceful setting where time seems to stand still—a true escape just minutes away by boat.

Unique Experiences Between Sea and Mountains

What makes the French Riviera so unique is its constant contrast between sea and mountains—and this opens the door to some truly surprising activities. Have you ever tried paddleboarding at sunrise? Along the coasts of Nice or Antibes, this becomes almost a meditative experience, with calm waters and an incomparable golden light.

For thrill-seekers, you can try paragliding over the sea from the heights of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Flying above the Mediterranean, with breathtaking views of villas and hidden coves, is an unforgettable experience.

But the unusual doesn’t stop there. In the hinterland near the Gorges du Loup, you can try canyoning. Waterfall descents, jumps into natural pools, zip lines over the water… a refreshing and adrenaline-filled adventure, far from the classic image of Riviera relaxation.

And for something even more original, why not try a night hike? Accompanied by a guide, you’ll discover wildlife and nature from a completely different perspective, with the sounds and scents of the night transforming the experience.

Discovering the Riviera Differently: Between Traditions and Surprises

The French Riviera is also a land of traditions—but often revisited in surprising ways. In Grasse, the world capital of perfume, you can take part in a workshop to create your own fragrance. It’s an immersive activity that introduces you to ancestral craftsmanship while letting your creativity flow.

Further west, near Saint-Tropez, you can explore vineyards in a unique way—by electric bike or during a sunset wine tasting among the vines. An elegant and original way to enjoy local flavors.

Finally, for a truly unique experience, I recommend visiting local markets… at dawn. In Antibes or Nice, some markets come alive in the early hours of the day. You’ll meet passionate producers in an authentic atmosphere, far from the daytime tourist crowds.

And if you enjoy out-of-the-ordinary experiences, some historic villas open their doors for theatrical visits or immersive dinners. It’s a unique way to dive into the glamorous history of the Riviera, blending cinema, art, and international figures.
