What to Do on the French Riviera in June: The Most Beautiful Experiences to Enjoy Before Summer

June is an absolutely ideal time to discover the French Riviera. The days are long, the sun is already shining brightly, the sea begins to warm up, and the summer atmosphere slowly settles into every town along the coast. As a tour guide, it’s one of my favorite months to recommend because you get to enjoy everything that makes the region so charming, but with a much more relaxed atmosphere than in the peak of summer.

So, what should you do on the French Riviera in June? Between paradise-like beaches, open-air festivals, and local discoveries, here are the experiences I always recommend to travelers who want to fully enjoy the South of France.

Enjoy the Beaches and Hidden Coves Before High Season

In June, the French Riviera already feels like summer vacation. Temperatures often rise above 25°C (77°F), café terraces are lively, and the beaches begin to fill with sunseekers. Yet, it’s still far less crowded than in August, and that’s exactly what makes this period so enjoyable.

For me, it’s the best time to enjoy the most beautiful beaches on the French Riviera. In Nice, the famous pebble beaches attract the first real sunbathers of the season, while in Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, and Saint-Raphaël, the sandy beaches become true little corners of paradise.

I especially love recommending the quieter coves between Théoule-sur-Mer and the Massif de l’Estérel. The water is often crystal clear as early as June, and the scenery is stunning, with red rocks plunging into the Mediterranean Sea.

It’s also the perfect season to try water activities. Paddleboarding, kayaking, boat trips, or snorkeling — the sea is calm and conditions are ideal. Many visitors discover a different side of the French Riviera during this time, one that feels wilder and more natural.

And of course, it’s impossible to talk about June without mentioning the sunsets. The evenings become incredibly mild, and beach restaurants begin offering their first summer atmospheres. Dining by the sea while watching the sun disappear behind the hills is an unforgettable experience.

Festivals and Summer Evenings That Bring the Riviera to Life

June also marks the beginning of festival season on the French Riviera. After the excitement of the Cannes Film Festivalin May, it’s time for concerts, cultural events, and open-air evenings.

In Nice, Monaco, and Antibes, the first major music events already attract large crowds. The atmosphere becomes more festive while remaining pleasant and relaxed. You can truly feel that summer is approaching, and the whole region seems to spend more time outdoors.

June is also an excellent time to enjoy the night markets that begin appearing in several seaside resorts. I always recommend these evening walks to visitors: you’ll find local artisans, Provençal specialties, handmade jewelry, and that typically Mediterranean atmosphere that gives the South of France its charm.

In the hilltop villages of the hinterland, many local festivals also take place. Concerts in village squares, jazz festivals, open-air performances — there is always something new to discover.

And then there’s the special atmosphere of June evenings: the streets stay lively until late at night, terraces overflow with life, and everyone finally enjoys the summer softness they’ve been waiting for all winter.

Discover the Riviera Hinterland Between Nature and Hilltop Villages

Even though the beaches naturally attract visitors in June, I always recommend spending at least one day exploring the hinterland of the French Riviera. It’s a completely different experience, but just as beautiful.

In June, the landscapes are still very green, temperatures remain pleasant for walking, and the hilltop villages are especially full of flowers. Places like Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Èze, or Valbonne reveal all their beauty during this season.

What I love about these villages is their peaceful atmosphere. You’ll discover shaded alleyways, charming little squares, and breathtaking panoramic views over the Mediterranean.

Hiking enthusiasts also particularly enjoy this time of year. The trails of the Massif de l’Estérel or the Mercantour National Park offer spectacular views between sea and mountains. In June, the temperatures are still comfortable enough to fully enjoy long walks and hikes.

It’s also the season when Provençal markets are at their most colorful. Heirloom tomatoes, apricots, melons, olives, lavender — the stalls overflow with local products and Mediterranean scents. For me, it’s one of the best ways to discover the art of living on the French Riviera.
