Every year, when March 8th arrives, International Women’s Rights Day takes on a special resonance here on the French Riviera. As a guide on the Riviera, I often notice that people talk a lot about the sunshine, the palaces, and the artists… but much less about the women who have profoundly shaped our region.
And yet, from Nice to Monaco, via Menton, Cannes, and Grasse, the history of the Riviera has also been written by women. Political leaders, queens, artists, resistance fighters, creators… Some were born here, others stayed for a time, and others still chose to rest here forever.
March 8th is a wonderful opportunity to remember that the Riviera is not just a postcard setting. It is also a land of commitment, modernity, and freedom for women.
